One of the most significant
landmarks within the Erie Cemetery is the Scott mausoleum,
a structure that not only holds historical significance but also represents the
artistic and architectural legacy of our area. It was built by William Scott who made his fortune in coal mining and railroads. He also served as Mayor of Erie for two terms and was a two term U. S. Congressman. Unfortunately, over the years,
the Scott mausoleum has suffered significant deterioration and the funds left
by the Scott family for its upkeep were depleted on previous restoration projects.
It is a goal of the Erie Cemetery Association Foundation to preserve the structure’s
integrity and honor the memories of those interred there. Restoration of the
Scott mausoleum would not only enhance the aesthetic value of the cemetery but
also serve to educate future generations about the contributions of the Scott
family.
The mausoleum was
constructed in 1888 from granite blocks. Over the years, significant portions
of the mortar have eroded allowing water to seep through the blocks. The interior
now has water entering from the walls and roof causing water pooling and
calcification on the walls. A large slab of granite on an interior wall is loose
and likely to fall. The solid bronze doors of this granite building are now
misaligned due to structure movement and the beautiful stained-glass windows are
buckling and portions are broken.
To return the structure to
a stable condition, the exterior will need a complete repointing and sealing.
Tree limbs close to the structure need to be removed. The interior needs to be dried
out, with portions of the walls repointed, and other structural issues, such as
the loose granite slab, addressed. The stained-glass windows will need to be
removed, restored and reinstalled.
Based on quotes received,
the total cost of the project ranges from $110,000 to $136,000 with the exterior
work and the stained-glass window repair being the two most expensive elements.
The Erie Cemetery Association Foundation has already begun a fundraising campaign
with over $60,000 in donations already received. All funds raised through Erie Gives
will be allocated to this project.
