EmpowerU Specialty Fitness Inc.

A nonprofit organization

Eight years ago, my wife and I received news that changed our lives: the child we were expecting had been diagnosed with Trisomy 21—more commonly known as Down syndrome.

The moment stopped us in our tracks. We had been preparing to welcome our first child into the world, but with this diagnosis, we found ourselves stepping into unfamiliar territory—uncharted waters filled with uncertainty, hope, and deep responsibility.

As a father, my instinct was to learn everything I could. I wanted to understand how to support our daughter, help her thrive, and guide her toward a life of independence, self-worth, and possibility. I wanted her to see herself fully—her strengths, challenges, abilities, and potential. I wanted to give her the space to dream big and the tools to achieve.

From my experience in fitness, I knew just how powerful movement could be in building confidence, structure, and a sense of control. And I also knew the truth: individuals with disabilities are significantly more likely to face health issues related to poor nutrition and limited access to inclusive exercise opportunities.

As I looked for solutions, I discovered programs in early intervention and adaptive physical education—but most of these services stopped at a certain age. When adulthood begins, so many individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are left without the wellness support they need. Their health and potential are overlooked by a fitness industry that wasn’t designed with them in mind.

That’s why I founded EmpowerU Specialty Fitness.

EmpowerU is more than a gym or a training program. It’s a space where movement becomes a vehicle for growth, where health is approached holistically, and where every body is treated with dignity, care, and high expectations. What started as a mission for my daughter has grown into a movement—for her, and for the hundreds of athletes like her who deserve the same opportunity to live well, feel strong, and be seen.

This work is a form of expression, of gratitude, and of belief in a better, more inclusive future. One rep, one class, one empowered athlete at a time.
