Evangelical and Reformed Historical Society

A nonprofit organization

The Evangelical and Reformed Historical Society provides services to scholars, genealogists, theologians and individuals interested in the history and traditions of the Evangelical and Reformed Church and its predecessor denominations. The Evangelical and Reformed Church includes the former (German) Evangelical Synod of North America (organized 1840), the former (German) Reformed Church in the United States (organized 1725), and the former Hungarian Reformed Church (organized 1890).

The Society works to preserve local church records of baptism, confirmation, marriage and deaths that aid genealogists in discovering their unique family history. Also included in these groups are photographs, minutes, and other materials that tell the stories of the life of each church and the various organizations that comprised the former denomination. In addition to genealogical research, scholars and theologians seek out materials related to prominent theologians and church leaders that included John W. Nevin, Philip Schaff, Reinhold Niehbur, and Louis Nollau. The Society is also the official depository for the former Church and holds synod, conference, classis, district, and congregational level materials.
