Extra Mile Education Foundation, Inc.

A nonprofit organization

The Extra Mile Education Foundation supports the education of urban children in select Pittsburgh parochial elementary schools through operational and scholarship support. The schools are in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods, and the students are primarily African American and non-Catholic.

The Extra Mile Education Foundation supports program initiatives within the schools. Program needs are developed in conjunction with each school's principal and faculty and vary at each school; however, most fall within the following five program areas: 1) assessment and evaluation; 2) academic development; 3) enrichment for both students and faculty; 4) tuition assistance; 5) technology. Program costs vary, depending upon the program. A sampling of programs currently in operation at one or both of the Extra Mile-supported schools is: a) PATHS (Promoting Alternative Strategies for Thinking): a program that develops self-control and emotional maturity in young students; b) Cyberchase: a math-based program that develops budget and savings skills; c) Instrumental music program with Duquesne University music education majors mentoring students; d) Fuel Up to Play 60 - a joint program of the Mid-Atlantic Dairy Council and NFL that promotes good eating habits that support active play.
