In all the world, there is no place like it. The Falls of the Ohio region, and the incredible State Park, are a crossroads of nature and history. The park features access to one of the largest exposed Devonian fossil beds in the world and is part of a 1,404-acre National Wildlife Conservation Area. Perched on a small bluff overlooking a wide sweep of the expansive Ohio River, a newly revitalized state of the art, immersive and interactive Interpretive Center brings to life giant fossil beds telling a story 390-million-years in the making. The Falls of the Ohio connects the environment of the ancient past with the natural and cultural history of yesterday and today. Whether you love fossils, nature, wildlife, or history, this is the place you will want to explore!
About the Falls
Made famous by a handshake, there is no other place in the world like the Falls of the Ohio. Long before Lewis and Clark left these rocky shores on their westward adventure, this landscape was being carved by receding glaciers, exposing one of the largest Devonian-era fossil beds on the planet and creating a space that now holds significant natural, cultural, and historic resources.
For centuries Mammoths and then American Bison crossed the shallow water here at the Falls. Their existence brought people who settled on these lands and, as our current civilization took root, the barrier created by the Falls made this a major trading and distribution center - transforming our region to what we now call home.
Today, this natural landscape offers a place for people from all walks of life to experience nature and learn. The only area along the entire Ohio River set aside for both conservation and recreation, the Falls provides an array of free educational programs and places to fish, hike, walk, bike, paddle, picnic, bird watch, relax and escape in this beautiful urban oasis.
Supported by the generosity of our community, the Falls of the Ohio Foundation continues to support this area's unique resources elevating and preserving the landscape for future generations, educating our community on the Falls' significance, and activating it in ways that connect us to the stories of our past. Your support of our efforts makes this possible. Thank you.
