Fostering Health and Healing with Food and Compassion.

Food For Thought is a nonprofit organization dedicated to meeting the nutrition needs of people living with serious medical conditions and at risk of food insecurity. We were founded in 1988 amidst the AIDS epidemic by a few volunteers looking to feed their seriously ill neighbors. Since then, we have grown from a small grassroots, place-based project into a blossoming organization providing medically tailored food and comprehensive nutrition services to thousands of Sonoma County residents affected by a range of serious illnesses, including HIV, cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, and other chronic and critical medical condirions. We also provide nutrition therapy services to pregnant mothers and their families, housing insecure individuals, and those who have recently been discharged from the hospital and at risk of malnutrition.

Our comprehensive nutrition services improve health outcomes, promote health equity, address food insecurity and malnutrition, and strengthen Sonoma County’s healthcare safety net for thousands of people.

Our services include:

  • Free Weekly Medically-Tailored Groceries: Fresh produce, healthy proteins, nutritional supplements, and vitamins.
  • Medically-Tailored Prepared Meals: Prepared with care to meet each client’s individual dietary needs.
  • Custom Meals: Each household chooses which groceries and meals based not only on medical needs but also personal and cultural preferences.
  • Nutrition Counseling: Guidance from registered dieticians to help people navigate their new or existing medical conditions.
  • Bags of Love: For homeless clients, we offer bags of ready-to-eat, shelf-stable items.
  • Countywide delivery to homebound and homeless clients.
  • All services are provided in English and Spanish.

Food For Thought's facility is surrounded by our flourishing organic garden. The food we grow and harvest is full of flavor and nutrients, which contributes greatly to our clients healing process. Many of our clients feel the garden provides them with physical and spiritual healing.
