Fine Art Miracles, Inc. (FAM), is a nonprofit organization that provides people with special needs, the social, emotional and cognitive benefits of Creative Art Therapies (fine art lessons, art & music therapy, multi-sensory programs and FAMbots (social robot enhanced learning), bringing the benefits of emerging technology out of the research world and to the greater public. We work with all ages and all capabilities to positively impact individuals, families and communities.

We work to enhance the quality of life for people of all ages with challenges, in Western PA (and Western NY) through cultural enrichment and human services. We provide the cognitive, social and emotional benefits of fine art lessons, art & music therapy, multi-sensory engagements and social robot enhanced learning to those who will derive the most benefit: the elderly living in nursing homes, memory care and assisted living facilities (primarily women), children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the homeless, at risk youth, children living in economically challenged neighborhoods and anyone having difficulty with the activities of daily living. We strive to improve the lives of others, with particular attention to the elderly and all ages living with challenges. FAM's mission is to take our services to those who otherwise would not have access to the kind of opportunities we provide. Our work with nursing homes and community services organizations that offer day programs for adults with IDD, some of our communities most vulnerable members, addresses loneliness and social isolation that are by-products of sheltering in place, improves self esteem and empowers those who doubted their ability to be creative.

Our art sessions combine an educational component with hands-on creative expression. We share the work of a master artist; then facilitate an art project that is in some way related to the work of that master. And we offer as much individual attention as is necessary to guarantee that participants will leave the class with a piece of artwork they are proud of. FAM music therapy groups are person-centered, fun, engaging, and therapeutic in nature. Our certified Music Therapists set goals for the participants and design programming that will meet those goals over time. Instruments, movement, group-singing, and reminiscence experiences are just some of the tools being used in our group sessions.

We embraced socially assistive robotics (an unlikely move for an organization that began as an arts nonprofit) because we experienced the overwhelming success of improved communication skills and learning for children with challenges, when they had the opportunity to work with a robot. Simply put: children pay closer attention when a robot is speaking than they do when a human is speaking. Many schools are are teaching robotics, but none is using the robot as a peer learner. Only FAM. We design and evaluate social skills lessons combined with a variety of other themes: SEL, STEM, Joint Attention and Literacy.

FAM has traditionally delivered all programming to those we serve, with a goal of removing transportation as a barrier. Now, as we expand our ability to reach challenged individuals more effectively FAM encounters a new barrier: COVID-19. This means today we embrace a new opportunity to strategically pivot, transforming our in-house service delivery to packaged ART2 GO art lessons and virtual Creative Expression options. This will allow us to not only serve our existing partners but to reach out to more folks in western PA who are suffering from loneliness and social isolation, challenged folks who are withdrawing and regressing, people of all ages who need our attention.
