Why Can’t I Go to a Catholic School?
That simple question changed everything.
Christopher said it back in 2016—just wanting what his siblings had: to learn, grow, and belong in a place where faith is part of everyday life. That one question became the spark that ignited a movement. And from that spark, the FIRE Foundation of New Hampshire was born
FIRE stands for Foundation for Inclusive Religious Education, and our mission is beautifully simple:to make Catholic education possible for children with disabilities. We believe every child deserves to be part of a faith-filled school community, to walk the same hallways, learn in the same classrooms, and feel like they truly belong.
Sadly, many Catholic schools just don’t have the resources to support students with special learning needs. That’s where FIRE comes in.
We partner with Catholic schools across the Diocese of Manchester to help them welcome students of all abilities. Through donor support, we help schools hire special educators, provide classroom aides, and access tools and training that make inclusive education a reality—not just a dream. It is a reality as Colin, pictured above, was able to attend Mount Royal Academy in Sunapee with this siblings over the last three years.
This past school year: 19 students at Saint Benedict Academy in Manchester received learning plans and supports, along with their teachers, making it possible for them to thrive in school. The Principal, Mrs Paiva shares:
"It is all the small victories that we have experienced. By formalizing student Individual Service Plans (ISP) we opened a dialogue with parents and placed an emphasis on partnership and provided teachers with documentation of strategies in support of students. We are building a culture that sees the possibilities for all students one small step at a time."But we can’t do it alone.
Since 1996, FIRE Foundations across the country have invested MILLIONS in making inclusive Catholic education possible. Here in New Hampshire, we’re just getting started—but the impact has already been incredible. Students with disabilities are not just being accepted in our schools—they’re thriving. They’re making friends, receiving the sacraments with their classmates, and growing in faith and confidence every single day.
And their classmates? They’re learning something too—compassion, empathy, and the true meaning of community.
