The Center for Transformative Action is a social justice nonprofit formed in 2010 by First Unitarian Church of Louisville to engage institutions and individuals in taking action in social justice, human rights, and the preservation of the planet.  Our continuing intent is to transform the lives of individuals and our community using research, action, education, and resource support.  First Unitarian members serve as volunteers, partners, and leaders in bringing about social and economic justice.

As an organization we are committed to transformative actions. The following are our 2024-25 projects that are making a difference and need support:

1.  Homeless Compassion Project - provide and promote services.

2. Diversity Equity and Inclusion project for minorities, women, and the LBGTQ+ communities.

3. Environmental - FirstU Fix-it small appliance repair service.

  1. Homelessness Compassion, and Affordable Housing Project:  Our members are active in improving our community's response to the unhoused. A volunteer team improves the treatment of those who are most in need.  We conduct education sessions and forums, provide meals, assist with temporary housing, and improve access to mental health services through coordination with community partners. Help for the most vulnerable remains a challenge in our community. Funding will expand our involvement in this endeavor.

  2. Social Justice Program - Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: This is a continuing concern in our faith community. Mirorities, women, and the LGBTQ community are treated as second-class citizens.  Human rights are subject to inconsistent standards and loss of court protections.  Social services and healthcare access are limited by gender identity, racial, and economic injustices.  Specific projects are planned pending funding:

A. Expand access to a homeless women's day center one or more mornings per week.  Women have one half-day, three days per week versus men who have three-fourths of a day seven days per week. Funding for staffing, volunteers, and facility improvements is needed.

B. Minority activism project will  work with our minority community partners to increase participation and increase the public face of vital minority contributions.  Too many stories go untold.  This project will work to change this continuing inbalance in our social justice face in Louisville.

  3. FirstU Fix-It is an environmental justice project to assist those with limited incomes and/or access to technicians to get help in repairing small appliances that they need in daily living. It will reduce the number of items that enter the waste stream and impact the cost-of-living for those who have limited resources.  Smaller things like lamps, clothes, fans, clocks, radios, toasters, kitchen appliances are too often discarded when, with some care and minor parts, they can continue to have a useful life.  Regularly scheduled FirstU Fix-It Events will help those who normally would not be able to get things repaired with funding (for those who qualify) for parts and any specialized labor. Volunteers will conduct the program as a community service to improve our recycle, repair, and reuse processes and help our most vulnerable to reduce/remove repair expenses. Partnerships with small business repair shops will be developed as an additional resource for clients and volunteers.
