STEM City

A nonprofit organization

STEM City seeks to elevate people and place through Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). At our core we are driven by passion for STEM and a desire to do more for our community. We value collaborative spirit, inclusiveness, a willingness to try new things and personal relationships. We operate with transparency, integrity and work in the world of the possible.

STEM City was born out of a shared community vision to recognize, celebrate and expand the tremendous human and capital assets in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) that exist in Flagstaff. We connect the vibrancy of Flagstaff's STEM businesses, organizations and resources to our schools, students and families to strengthen our education, economy and environment. We employ our passion for STEM to empower and create real, meaningful impact for all the citizens of Flagstaff. All of our work is done in collaboration with community partners; K-12 schools, STEM focused for and non-profit organizations, city and country government and organizations that serve to support local businesses.

Here are a few examples of how STEM City connects with the community:

Flagstaff Community STEM Celebration
This annual one night event showcases Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education and careers in Flagstaff. Over 160 local organizations participate, each with interactive activities for all ages. Over 3000 community members attend making it one of the most popular one day community events in Flagstaff.

STEM Kits
With the help of our donors and funders, we offer a collection of STEM kits available for check out. These kits are free and available to educators, STEM Club advisers, home school parents, and out-of-school-time programs. Currently, we offer BioScience kits and EiE (Engineering is Elementary) kits suitable for students ranging from 3rd to 12th grade.

The Flagstaff "STEMMY" Awards
STEM Award Night is held annually and awards the STEM Teacher, Student, and Community Leader of the Year. The STEM Student of the Year receives a $500 cash prize from STEM City.

AmeriCorps STEM VISTA Project (http://www.flagstaffstemcity.com/stem-vista-project.html)
Flagstaff STEM Education VISTA Project goal is to increase the academic performance and interest in STEM of youth who are currently underrepresented in STEM fields.
We work with our partner, Northern Arizona University's Civic Service Institute to recruit and retain 10 VISTA members and place these members at over 9 STEM focused organizations (sites) across the community.
