Why do our public libraries matter now more than ever?
Because 26% of adults in New Orleans struggle with basic math and literacy skills.
Because 30% of New Orleans homes lack internet access.
Because families need safe spaces to learn and thrive.
Because communities need places where everyone belongs.
These aren't just statistics - they're our neighbors. And their success is tied to our shared future as a city.
The City of New Orleans provides funding for basic library services. But the Friends of New Orleans Public Library provides funding for additional resources and programs that take our library system to a new level of excellence.
Funds donated to the Friends are used to:
Support early literacy programs for young children to help them arrive at kindergarten ready to learn
Provide community enrichment programs such as the Summer Fun Reading Challenge, Gen Fest, the African-History Month activities, and more
Fund Teen Read and Ride, which provides free bus passes to youth ages 11 to 18 to attend library programs
Award scholarships to NOPL employees who are pursuing their masters degrees in Library Science
From Michael Marina, NOPL staff member and FNOPL scholarship recipient:
"The FNOPL scholarship means more than just financial support. It feels like I'm being supported by our community members. I'm not just working on this degree for myself, but for everyone around me. Its a partnership, and a symbol of trust, one that I am honored to receive."
From a parent:
"Keep up the great work! We love our library and are proud to be raising kids who value the great importance of libraries to our community."
