THE FREEDOM HOUSE

A nonprofit organization

Our mission is to resurrect the greatness of community through acknowledgement & preservation of history.

Originally a Safe House during the Civil Rights Movement, the Castle Family provided housing for James Baldwin, Lena Horne, Stokely Carmichael, and hundreds of others at the Castle Family Home which later became coined "The Freedom House."

Reclaimed in 2021 by a Black Woman and now shared with the community as a place to book meetings, events, and programming on the ancestral grounds of the Freedom House.

In 2022 Friends of the Freedom House, a non-profit was created as the container for the Community Space, restored Safe House, and the House Museum.

This year FFH launched programming at the Freedom House surrounding educating young people on the history of the Civil Rights Movement, Homebuyer Education in partnership with Chase Bank, and much more coming down the pipeline!

Friends of the Freedom House is raising $5,000 that will go towards our larger Exhibition Design Fundraising Goal of $75,000.

Testimonials

I was one of the first people to donate money to Friends of the Freedom House, I spent the last year and a half now donating my time and storytelling to the Freedom House Museum. I'm honored that my family's legacy lives on.

-John "Johnny" Castle, Family Member of Civil Rights Iconic Castle Family

Beloved Community was able to book the space in the same room James Baldwin danced in. How iconic.

-Dr. Allisyn Swift (Beloved Community)
