Since 1965, the Garnavillo Historical Society has been researching, recording and preserving the history of Garnavillo and the surrounding area. The book "Garnavillo, Gem of the Prairie" Garnavillo History from 10,000 B.C. to 1876, was published in 1988. A few copies are still available for sale. The Historical Society owns four (4) historical buildings in Garnavillo: The Congregational Church built in 1867, currently the main historical museum; the Lodge Hall built by the I.O.O.F. in 1860 which contains some of its original furnishings; an 1830's log cabin that was moved from its original location and reconstructed in the City Park; and the 1860 Law Office of Crosby & Brown which is currently a private law office. The Society has digitized many historical newspapers, some dating back to 1853, now available to the public online at no charge under the research page of the Society's website. The Society and the local library collaborate to upload historic area photographs on the Iowa Heritage Digital Collections website. The museum, open from June - September on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and at other times by appointment, houses archives containing thousands of early manuscripts dating back to the 18th century, important old maps and photos, artifacts from 12,000 B.C., a mastodon bone found in the area, political, civil and world war exhibits, early pioneer tools & household items, a 1902 Crestmobile, and much more. The Lodge Hall contains many historical fraternal organizations' memorabilia and artifacts dating back to the 19th century. The public, students and tour groups are always welcome to visit or make online inquiries. We work to make area history available and accessible to others regardless of where they live. The main museum and Lodge Hall are air conditioned. The Society is currently completing preservation work on the Log Cabin.  Future projects include a new ceiling and roof replacement for the Lodge Hall and display cabinet renovation in the museum. With ownership of four historical buildings, maintenance and upkeep is always a concern so that the history contained within can be kept preserved and available to the public.
