Helping Families Living Through Pediatric Cancer ~ Emotionally, Financially & Spiritually

Upon diagnosis of pediatric cancer at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, family is given a supply bag from the oncology social worker. These are called Go Bags and they are filled with everything a new parent will need to get through their first stay, and the many stays thereafter. We give the social workers 10-15 of these bags each month. Newly diagnosed children are able to receive some type of electronic distraction from Genre's Kids. We give the Child Life team Nintendo video systems with cartridges, tablets, Leapster educational games, ITunes cards, and baby crib kick mats.(Distribution depends on age of patient) We also give the oncology social worker $1,000 in gas gift cards each month. These are distributed to the neediest families or the families that drive the furthest. We also help with immediate financial needs. Many needs that arises for families are brought to our attention through the social workers at CHP. We have paid rent, mortgages, repairs, utilities, fuel, food, provided snow tires, and also helped with a funeral expenses.
