Grand Island Hometown Heroes

A nonprofit organization

The purpose of the Grand Island Hometown Heroes is to honor the U.S. Military Veterans and Active-Duty service members in the Grand Island community. Participants in the program can display their patriotism by purchasing a banner to be displayed on utility light poles along Capital Ave, Broadwell Ave & Webb Rd. The banners honor a resident or their family member(s) who have served or are currently serving our Country in any branch of the U.S. Military. Banners will be displayed for two periods (years) from Memorial Day to Veterans Day. Banners are purchased by individuals and hung by a licensed hanger.

Grand Island Hometown Heroes was formed by seven volunteer board members who all share a common interest and passion for recognizing our Veterans and Active Duty service members. The group is formed by members who have a drive to expand this program and continue the efforts for years to come. Starting in 2024 we made strides to get approval and start this program to better the community of Grand Island, and show Grand Island's pride in our hometown veterans and active duty service members. After the first set of banners went up and the overwhelming amount of interest, we knew this program would be continued for years to come. We asked for the 2 streets leading to Capital to be included and got approved. We emphasis that all these roads lead our veterans and service members to a place where they can come together either at the Veterans Cemetery or the United Veterans Club. We believe this program brings a sense of pride and honor to those who deserve it. Driving down one of these 3 roads and seeing so many faces and names makes you smile...these men and women fought for our country. We can not say THANK YOU enough. Each year we look forward to honoring more men and women.
