Grow Pittsburgh's mission is to teach people how to grow food and promote the benefits gardens bring to our neighborhoods. We address inequities in Allegheny County by making farm-fresh produce available in food-insecure neighborhoods and by providing the tools, resources, and knowledge for people of all ages to grow their own food.

Grow Pittsburgh's efforts are organized around three departments (School Gardens, Community Projects, and Farm Education & Production) and three strategies:

1) WE GROW FOOD for our community through our urban farm sites and greenhouse, providing affordable chemical-free fresh fruits and vegetables at our farm stands in low-income neighborhoods and through donations to free food distributions. With your help, we can share fresh local produce with more than 6,000 residents in low-income areas.

2) WE TEACH PEOPLE HOW TO GROW FOOD through school garden curriculum, teacher trainings, workforce development for youth, new farmer training, gardening workshops, and other resources for home, school and community gardeners, and urban farmers. You can help share hands-on garden learning and nutrition education with more than 27,500 children and adults in our community.

3) And WE BUILD AND SUPPORT GARDENS for preK-12 schools and communities throughout Allegheny County (currently a network of more than 185 gardens). With your support, we can help more than 50 gardens make improvements this year to grow more fresh food.

You can help people enjoy the many benefits of gardening!

Testimonials

"Growing your own food is so empowering. In a world where so many who look like me have so little, the garden means a lot. Self-sufficiency and a connection to the earth and your place in it are priceless. Gardens feed the body, but gardening feeds the soul." - Trina G., Garden Resource Center member

"The garden has become a space that students can go to when they're feeling anxious or overwhelmed or just having a bad day. It provides them a place to step away when they need a break." -Principal, South Allegheny Education Center

"Grow Pittsburgh is really growing food that the community is asking for at prices we can afford." -Braddock farm stand visitor
