Families seeking to build a Habitat home know what it is like to choose between paying rent or filling a prescription. They have decided between buying groceries or a tank of gas. Often, their housing is overcrowded and in poor condition. Habitat offers a path to homeownership designed to allow families to invest in their home and their future.
We partner with families that demonstrate a need for quality, affordable housing, are willing and able to pay an affordable mortgage, and are ready to invest sweat equity and learn the skills necessary to become successful homeowners. Every Habitat home represents a partner family who successfully walked the pathway to homeownership and committed to giving back to their community. Since incorporation in 1991, we have partnered with 35 families, built 27 homes, and have more on the way.
The need for affordable housing is only increasing, and Dubuque and Jackson Counties Habitat for Humanity is growing too! In 2025, we broke ground on Rosalynn Carter Place (named in honor of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter). The is a multi-phase, multi-year project that will eventually contain 14 single-family homes and is located in the heart of surrounding the Mt. Pleasant-Wood Street neighborhood. We completed Phase I in early 2026, which included site development and construction of the first three homes; the first three partner families went to closing soon thereafter. Thus far, our progress with this historic undertaking has increased our overall organizational impact by 13%. And with Phase II launched, we anticipate completing two more homes in 2026. The dedicated leaders that make up our Board of Directors continue to reach into the community and develop partnerships to support the community and the environment.
It's a powerful choice to join our community of volunteers, businesses, and organizations taking action to increase construction of accessible, workforce housing while removing barriers to affordable homeownership. Volunteer labor and in-kind donations from likeminded vendor partners allow us to keep building costs low. With your gift, we build with qualified families to make their dream of homeownership come true. We build with volunteers to foster community. We bring people together to build hope.
