Horseheads Family Resource Center

The HFRC is a fun and welcoming place where families with young children can play, make friends, and learn about our community in a safe, enriching environment.

HFRC programs support families and prepare students for school success by providing a place for parents to ask questions about their children, get suggestions about intervention programs and find out where to turn when these resources are needed.  Activities and toys that promote school-readiness skills are thoughtfully introduced into the HFRC. The ability to ask questions of the trained and knowledgeable staff is a unique feature that many parents and caregivers appreciate.

Families appreciate the services that the HFRC provides, which are funded by generous donors like you and are free of charge to all families.  Your donation helps the HFRC do the following:

  •   Provide fun, educationally enriching experiences to more than 1,200 local children
  •   Offer encouragement, advice, resources, and referrals to over 700 families
  •   Host supervised visits in our nurturing, supportive, child-friendly space
  •   Support parents through workshops, support groups, and classes
  •   Offer programs that assist with speech, socialization, and development

The need for programs that support families with young children has increased.

One need that we see often is speech and language support and development.  Many young children have experienced a decrease in expressive language as a result of limited exposure to the outside world.  The need for speech resources in our community is high with large waitlists for most programs.  The HFRC is dedicating time and funds to offer more small group programs, like Music & Movement, that promote expressive speech, participation, and socialization.  We hope to continue to expand these resources with the help of donors like you.

With your help, the HFRC also supports disadvantaged and underserved populations every day.

Both of our locations are on the public bus route, and we supply bus tokens to families who need them.  Ready-to-eat meals are on hand for families who may be struggling with food insecurity.  Our “Little Free Pantries” are stocked at both locations with donated diapers, formula, and personal care items.  They are available to everyone and are utilized frequently.  Our weekend hours also help us serve families who are dealing with homelessness and need safe, clean, and supportive environments during hours when shelters are not open.

The HFRC’s Supervised Visit Program works with the underserved population of non-custodial parents and gives them opportunities to build healthy relationships with their children in a private setting.  Like all of our programs, supervised visits are offered free of charge, making them accessible to families with monetary constraints.  There is an overwhelming need for supervised visits in our community and the courts recommend the HFRC so frequently that we have a waiting list.
