The Highland Center is a community center in the heart of Shreveport's unique Highland neighborhood, and our Highland Center Ministries serve neighbors with great needs.
The Highland Center Ministries brings together local churches to coordinate services meeting essential needs. Each week, volunteers host 2 family-style meals for our neighbors. Clothing closets have re-opened for men, women, and children, and neighbors can also find laundry vouchers and a small home good "shop" in the building.
Our team supports financial stability by offering low-interest "Hand Up" loans (a Pay Day loan alternative), monthly First Time Home Buyer classes, credit counseling, and a low-fee ATM. We offer free tax preparation and served a record 482 people in 2021.
Finally, we bring our neighbors together through community events, such as the Khaki Fair for school uniforms, the Halloween Trunk-or-Treat block party, and the annual Christmas Holiday Shoppe.
The Highland Center has also re-opened as a community center with nonprofit office spaces. Our community library, computer lab, and indoor gymnasium are active 6 days a week!
Importantly, the Highland Center is also increasing access to social services for neighbors with over 12 Nonprofit Partners operating in our building, meaning that families easily connect to multiple life-changing services all under one roof.
Our tenant partners provide after-school enrichment to teens; housing assistance to young adults on the brink of homelessness; educational classes in HiSET (GED), computer literacy, and entrepreneurship; immigrant support; diapers and hygiene supplies; mental health counseling services; workforce re-training for senior citizens; neighborhood advocacy; and worship services.
The Highland Center’s mission is to create a safe, welcoming place where everyone can learn, grow, and share to strengthen the Highland neighborhood.
However, we still have a very long and challenging path ahead to sustain our services for neighbors, make critical building repairs, and bring more partners together.
We truly need the support of community members like you to continue our progress to transform the lives of our neighbors and to remain a place of support and hope for Highland!
