Irondale exists at the intersection of art, education, community engagement, and social justice. Every play and program we produce is chosen for its relevance to the world today. At the core of what we do is the notion that theatre can lead us to a greater understanding of who we are and how we can communicate with each other in an increasingly polarized world.
Founded in 1983, we are one of the longest-established companies of our kind. We have staged almost 100 productions, including 13 original works created collaboratively by the company. As pioneers in the field of arts education, we have developed numerous programs that use theater to enhance teaching and learning and foster communication, empathy, and collaboration skills.
Irondale teaching artists currently help over 800 students become better presenters of academic research each year, train teens in acting and theater tech and design, and offer after-school programming in several schools. Some of our partners include Brooklyn College, NYU Tandon School of Engineering, Fort Greene Preparatory Academy, New Bridges Elementary, Arts & Letters 305 United, and Greene Hill School.
We helped create the Network of Ensemble Theaters—now the preeminent association of artist-driven theaters in the country—and the Downtown Brooklyn Arts Alliance.
In 2008, we moved to our first permanent space in Fort Greene. Built from the dormant ruins of a nineteenth-century Sunday School, The Space at Irondale is one of the lost gems of the borough brought back to life. Here is where we found our true community. Our theater is a performance space, a gathering space, sometimes a town hall, sometimes a place to mourn, celebrate, and protest. It is a home to our ensemble, a home away from home for our youth ensemble, and a vital resource to other artists.
