The Jefferson SPCA works to address animal overpopulation and improve animal welfare throughout Jefferson Parish through prevention, medical intervention, and community partnerships.
Since 2011, Jefferson SPCA has operated Louisiana’s largest and most ambitious low-cost spay and neuter program. As of the end of 2025, we have helped spay and neuter 127,856 animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, and male guinea pigs. Of those surgeries, 53,191 were community and feral cats, made possible through partnerships with dedicated volunteer trappers and caretakers. These efforts are critical to reducing shelter intake and improving quality of life for animals throughout the parish.
We know that we cannot adopt our way out of the overpopulation crisis. Prevention is essential, and spay and neuter remains the most effective, humane solution. Our programs are designed to make these services accessible while also supporting the health and well being of community cats who may never live in traditional homes.
Jefferson SPCA is also the nonprofit partner of Jefferson Protection & Animal Welfare Services (JPAWS), the parish animal shelter. Through this partnership, we help give animals entering the shelter the best possible chance at a positive outcome. We provide financial support for lifesaving veterinary care that falls outside standard shelter medicine, including specialty care such as cardiology, orthopedics, and ophthalmology.
In addition, we assist with animal transport, spending nearly $7,000 last year to help move animals from JPAWS into rescue partners and organizations better equipped to meet their needs, expanding opportunities for adoption and long-term care.
We are committed to the treatment and eradication of heartworm disease in dogs that would otherwise face euthanasia due to the cost of care. Each year, Jefferson SPCA spends approximately $15,000 to cover heartworm treatment for heartworm-positive dogs adopted from JPAWS, ensuring they receive the medical care needed for a healthy future.
Through prevention, medical support, and collaboration, Jefferson SPCA works every day to improve outcomes for animals and strengthen animal welfare in Jefferson Parish. Our impact is made possible through community support, responsible partnerships, and a shared commitment to giving every animal a chance at a healthy and humane life.
