The Joseph House is a resident-centered home and welcomes any terminally ill person enrolled in the hospice of their choice and with terminal illness - regardless of age, religion, sex, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, national origin, or disability. The Facility Board and staff concur with local hospices, that any person has the right to choose palliative care verses therapeutic care. Therefore, the Facility is committed to providing safe, compassionate, residential care in a home setting

Nestled on six acres of beautiful terrain in deep East Texas you can find The Joseph House. The Joseph House is a Specialized Care Facility licensed through Texas Health and Human Services and specializes in the care of the terminally ill patient. The Joseph House is a not for profit 501(c)(3) organization who receives no federal or state funding.

The Joseph House is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of 13 different East Texans with a passion for end-of-life care who volunteer their time. Many of them having had their own loved ones as residents of The Joseph House.

The Facility Board and staff concur with local hospices, that any person has the right to choose palliative care verses therapeutic care. Therefore, the Facility is committed to providing safe, compassionate, residential care in a home setting with and emphasis of palliative end of life care.

The Joseph House opened and accepted its first resident on May 12, 2013; and has since housed over 225 residents. We are both a service and philosophy. We provide comprehensive care to the terminally ill residents, their families, and significant others. It is our priority to help not only the resident, but their families to continue life as normal as possible as they go through the end-of-life phase. Often, many people fear the nearing death of a loved one, but death does not have to be feared. The end of a person's life is just as important as the beginning and middle. It is a journey that should be one of comfort, respect, and dignity. Memories can still be made even with someone who is near the end of their life. It should be a time of reminiscing, a time of love, and a time to celebrate the ones that we hold so dear in our hearts. A time to take an extra 30 minutes just to sit and hold the hand of someone you love. It should not be a time of fear, or anguish.

The Joseph House staff provides 24-hour personal hands-on care to the residents and families we serve in a home like atmosphere. Each resident has their own furnished area complete with a bedroom, living room, kitchen/eating area, closet, and bathroom with a walk-in shower. Family members are encouraged to make that area their own and often bring in decorations to make the resident feel more at home and ensure their comfort. Staff members provide three home-cooked meals a day, laundry services, companionship, and pain and symptom management while complementing the services of the residents chosen hospice. All staff has specialized training in end-of-life care, and care for residents and families with compassion and empathy as if they are our own.

The Joseph House relies completely on private funding, and donations. All care is covered by private donations and the small fee per day paid by the residents and their families. Because the Joseph House is considered a Special Care Facility and does not provide direct medical care we are not reimbursed through Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurances. We are extremely thankful for the community support we receive in order to continue to provide compassionate end of life care to each resident and their family we have served and will serve.
