Junior League of Northern Virginia

A nonprofit organization

Childhood obesity has broad health consequences for children and families, and affects 1 in 5 children in Northern Virginia. The Junior League of Northern Virginia (JLNV) prepares children for success by addressing childhood obesity through the promotion of nutrition and physical education, which is proven to enrich health, well-bring and academic outcomes. The JLNV is committed to reducing the number of impacted children by empowering families to make healthier choices.

Our community programs include: cooking classes with teens and parents; introducing children to where their food comes from and to basic concepts of nutrition and healthy eating through our Market Explorers and Kids in the Kitchen programs; holding our Kids Can monthly program at area family shelters and a swim camp in the summer and winter; supporting food access and community gardening initiatives; and hosting the Kids in the Kitchen Annual Spring Health Fair, our largest community event that serves hundreds of children.

Our goal is to raise $5,000 on Giving Tuesday to purchase wobble chairs for Mason Crest Elementary, a local Title 1 school. The wobble chairs will help the children engage in physical activity and expend excess energy in the classroom while improving focus and academic achievement.

Our Story

The Junior League of Northern Virginia is proud to be a vital force for driving positive community change in Northern Virginia since 1958.

The Junior League of Northern Virginia (JLNV) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to advance women’s leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration, and training.Throughout our robust history, the JLNV has been at the forefront of making a lasting impact in our Northern Virginia community, whether it was starting Reading is Fundamental in Alexandria in 1962, developing the Family Resource Center at Shelter House in the 1990s, or providing seed money for the Children’s Science Center in the 2000s.

We support several signature programs, with the collective goal of advancing women’s leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration, and training. Each program also aligns with our focus area, Women Helping Women, and continued commitment to improving the lives of women and families in Northern Virginia through access to essential services and professional development opportunities.

  • Community Grants Program: The JLNV awards annual grants of funds and volunteer hours through our Community Grants program that support projects aligned with our mission, focus area, and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Last year, the JLNV granted $10,000 to five local nonprofit organizations in the Northern Virginia area.

  • Volunteer action: Each year, the JLNV donates thousands of volunteer hours to community organizations and programs in alignment with our mission and focus area. Over the last year, the JLNV has provided 820 volunteer hours to different community partners, including Community Lodgings in Alexandria

  • Period Pantries: To further JLNV’s current focus area, the League is currently running a Period Pantry Campaign. Period pantries are designed to address the issue of period poverty by distributing free period products to anyone in need/ Since 2023, the JLNV has launched five local period pantries across Northern Virginia, including one located in Alexandria, while collecting more than 20,000 period products to keep up with demand.

  • JLNV Teens Program: The JLNV is the first League in the nation to establish the JLNV Teens program, an opportunity for high school teenage women to partner with us to ignite lasting change in their community through leadership development and volunteerism. This inaugural program was launched in Summer 2024 and currently has 38 members, including 12 teens from Alexandria.

Your support not only directly supports the leadership development of local women, but also directly fuels our mission, ensuring we continue making a lasting difference where it is needed most.
