When parents lose a child, they are left with a life that will forever be different - a life they did not plan for. Ben & Lara Gillham and Nick & Martha McGeehon certainly did not want to join this group that no one wants to be a member of, but they realized its support from like-parents is the only thing that provides a temporary sense of returning to normal. They, along with Dr. Ken Remy and Allison Remy, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, have created a non-profit in St. Louis, MO called "Just Enduring" to help bereaved parents during the worst time of their lives. More than 45,000 children pass away every year in the U.S., and every one of these children touch the lives of not only their parents, but also siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and even medical professionals. Among our resources, we offer:
1. Immediate Resources to help parents consider funeral options, discuss loss with surviving siblings and learn to grieve in ways that work for them. We also help those close to the parents with suggestions about what to say, what to do and how they might experience grief themselves.
2. "A Parent Like You" Program, which connects parents 1x1 with each other based on similar loss factors, such as the child's age and cause of death. We've found this human connection to be the most impactful to helping parents endure their loss.
