The Wichita County Heritage Society in 1974 with the purpose of saving and preserving the historic fabric of Wichita County.  Major accomplishments include the establishment of a Local Landmark Commission in 1978;  repurposing the Kell House into an historic house museum in 1981;  stabilization of the Littlest Skyscraper in 1986; restoring the Kemp-Kell Depot in 2000; the complete restoration of the Historic Holt Hotel into downtown living apartments in 2005; and stabilizing the Magnolia Building in 2014 (Old Post Office). In 2019, the name was changed to reflect the prominence of the Heritage Society's crown jewel - the Kell House Museum. The Heritage Society has worked, through various programs, to educate the public on the importance of historic preservation and our local history.

Your donation will help us continue the process of restoring the Kell House Museum. A lot of work has been done over the past year, but more remains. Plaster work in the parlor has to be completed, as does door and stained-glass window restoration. The organization will also continue its work in preserving the past as well as educating our future through various education and community programs, such as Santa House, Living History Days, Haunted Tours, Candlelight Tours, and others. Bringing new visitors to the Kell House Museum while exposing them to the history Wichita County has to offer, helps us in developing new stewards for our history. Every dollar you donate helps restore the site for so many important community programs.

Who We Are

In 1974, a group of visionaries founded the Wichita County Heritage Society with the goal of saving the heritage of Wichita County. From its inception, the Society has striven to be a strong influence in the community in the name of historic preservation. While our accomplishments are many, such as the Kemp-Kell Depot (Route Building), the Littlest Skyscraper, and the Holt Hotel, our future goals are just as great. Preservation starts at home. It demands perseverance, passion, and patience. Wichita County Heritage Society and its membership are focused on excellence in all of these areas.
