Kentucky Race Track Chaplaincy

Chaplains began serving at Kentucky race tracks over 50 years ago with the founding in 1972 of the Race Track Chaplaincy of America, a non-profit interdenominational organization. As the ministry and outreach grew, the Kentucky Division of Race Track Chaplains was formally established in 1989. Today, our Chaplains are serving Churchill Downs, Ellis Park, Kentucky Downs and Turfway Park race tracks in Kentucky, and Belterra Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. Chaplains also serve various training centers. The ministry's work is focused on the "backside" of race tracks where the horseman and horses come together and the need is great. In fact, the faith-based work done at the track is often described as the Backside Ministry. The backside of tracks can be compared to small communities and there is a sense of family among race track workers. The ministry strives to meet the spiritual and emotional needs of these workers by offering:

  • Weekly worship services and Bible studies
  • Christ-centered activities that promote fellowship
  • Baptism, marriage and funeral services
  • Facilitated children's programs

The Chaplaincy also serves as extended family for many track workers. It helps to meet those in physical need by providing:

  • An emergency food pantry
  • Basic hygiene supplies
  • Clothing closet
  • Assistance with transportation
