We provide financial support to individuals who can benefit from music and other creative arts therapy services in addition to their existing plan of care. We endeavour to make music and art based programming a normal part of healthcare. We partner with organizations that serve children and adults with disabilities, traumatic brain injury, alzheimer's and dementia, chronic illness, mental health and substance abuse issues, and more to reach into the community and unlock the mind through the arts.
Collin, a 4 year old with several disabilities and learning delays, has come such a long way since starting music, speech, and occupational therapy at Key Changes Therapy Services-a primarily pediatric (<21) nonprofit therapy clinic serving the special needs community of the Greater-Midlands Area since 2010 by providing speech, occupational, and creative arts therapies at low or no cost to the families who receive our services. His mom was hopeful that Collin would be able to increase his vocabulary and learn a few skills that would increase his independence. She didn't know that his first growth leap would be so sweet. Just the other week while in the car, Collin said "I love you" to his mom - completely unprompted, out of nowhere! She was so surprised she had to pull into a parking lot to stop crying.
While this may seem common to parents of kids without disabilities or delays, this was a huge step for Collin-and his mother. She had never heard him say those words to her (in his almost four years of life), unprompted, and without him just parroting them back.
Children like Collin grow and thrive because people like you believe that their potential is limitless. With your support, families see that limitless potential and feel surrounded by their village. We hope you consider donating to make it possible for parents to hear their child simply say, "I love you" for the first time.
Peyton has been going to KeyChanges for almost 2 years. Peyton has severe autism and is non-verbal. For many years we did traditional therapies (ST, OT, ABA) and it was hard, really hard. Peyton cried throughout sessions and she was making little progress. She just wasn't responding and we couldn't find ways to motivate her. That was until we came to meet Laura at Key Changes. It was amazing,
Peyton started responding more to others, using her speaking device to communicate, and overall is just a happier child. Music has been our way in with her. She is motivated to participate in school, her other therapies, and in daily interaction with others. Everyone who works with Peyton uses Laura's music recordings as a motivator and we also use in situations which may be overwhelming for her. The first time we saw how much music calmed her was last year during trick or treating. Typically Peyton would walk a little ways and then her dad would have to take her back to the house but last year we played music throughout trick or treating and she did great! No meltdowns, no crying, it was amazing. If everyone could see her reaction when we walk in those doors to Key Changes, it is the happiest she is all week long!! We are so thankful for everyone at Key Changes and hope Peyton will be going there for years to come!!
Hope Thomas
