In order to create awareness on the plight of the aging community and to bridge inter-generational gap, a modest start has been made. Lady Hearts has had an awesome start by executing our mission of sharing love to our Seniors! We have joined forces with local senior community centers and assisted living facilities, as well as gained the support of the New Orleans Council on Aging. Lady Hearts highlighted their first senior community center by hosting a fundraiser called the Savvy Senior Social, which raised over $14,000 in less than two months. Over $4,000 was donated to the Pontchartrain Park Community Center to assist in purchasing holiday equipment, recreational trips, arts and crafts workshops and more. This event was a night of laughter, dance, music and entertainment with all generations, memories the seniors will never forget!
The Lady Hearts now have a greater task as they move on to assist in facilitating needs of their next Senior center, The Harmony House. This center was established in 1976 under the direction of Mr. Norman Smith. The Harmony House has been a social, recreational and loving space for seniors to convene for years and is now risking having to close its doors due to a lack of funding. Additionally, there cultural trips have come to a haunt and staffing has been cut from eight to three. Lady Hearts has stepped in with hopes of turning some of their trials into triumphs!
As we expand our reach, our goals are to also provide the centers access to educational resources by hosting professional workshops (estate planning, will preparation assistance, health and fitness, pharmaceuticals, ministry, and digital literacy) at various senior centers in efforts to keep seniors informed and involved.
This is only the beginning as Lady Hearts want to continue highlighting other local senior community centers. Lady Hearts will capitalize on the professional skill set of their partnerships and organization membership. There has been a good rapport built with the community-the aging community, the younger generation, local businesses and local volunteers.
The goal is to improve the quality of life for that of the aging community and increase their feeling of inclusiveness within the society.
While Lady Hearts is dedicated to the aging community all over the United States, we are starting at home, New Orleans, and extending our services statewide, then nationwide!
Cindia Davis, Director of Pontchartrain Park Community Center. "Having an event given by Lady Hearts will allow us to accomplish some of the things we would like to do such as arts and crafts, lunch dates, as well as computer and sewing classes just to mention a few. We appreciate Lady Hearts choosing our center to be the first to sponsor seniors in the community. "
"This event presented by the Lady Hearts illustrates the commitment by a group of young ladies to assist in providing services to the senior population of the City of New Orleans," said Mr. Howard Rodgers, III, Executive Director of the New Orleans Council on Aging. "Their event and subsequent events will provide our seniors with additional equipment and activities that enhance their quality of life."
"Events like these highlight how special and in need of support, our senior centers are," said City Council President, Jason Williams. "The centers provide an invaluable service for our elders. Thank you to Lady Hearts for putting on a much-needed and celebratory event to benefit Pontchartrain Park Community Center."
