Lavender Light Gospel Choir is a mixed chorus of men and women from many ethnic and spiritual backgrounds. The choir was founded in 1985 by three black, gay men, who having left their own churches due to homophobia, decided to form the worlds first Lesbian and Gay Gospel Choir.

Since its inception 28 years ago, Lavender Light has served as an independent choir dedicated to providing a safe and supportive place for LGBTQ members to gather in a celebration of song and a ministry of tolerance and understanding. The choir has placed special emphasis on serving the community of black lesbians and gays who, too often, have been forced to choose between expressing pride in their ethnic heritage or in their sexual orientation.

The choir is deeply committed to serving not only as a place of spiritual respite but also as a force for deep understanding, empathy, and support to the wider LGBTQ community, as well. In addition to its many concerts and musical offerings, the choir has been a staunch advocate of HIV/AIDS awareness and education. Due in part to this commitment to building bridges of understanding between the gay and straight communities, Lavender Light has been honored to perform before wide and diverse audiences including at a recent Human Rights Campaign gala event in Washington, DC, where Nancy Pelosi was the keynote.

The choir is focused on vigorously strengthening its programs and on further developing its reach into the many communities it serves. We are asking for your support to make sure that the world’s first LGBTQ Gospel Choir remains its very best. Please consider a one-time gift to the choir to help us continue our work. Better yet, we would ask you to consider becoming a sustaining member by pledging to support us monthly at whatever level you choose.

Thank you.
