Hi, I am Darrick Calvin Executive Director, and this is my story and mission for LEON CALVIN BOXING GYM

Leon Calvin, AKA Leon Calvin Spinks, but to family he was known as Dickbrew.

Who was born to Zadie Mae Calvin on September 16, 1970.He was murdered on July 22, 1990, at age 19. At the time of his death he was undefeated in two professional bouts.

Leon Calvin Spinks was the son of Leon Spinks Sr. the American former professional boxer who competed from 1977 to 1995. In only his eighth professional fight, he won the undisputed heavyweight championship in 1978 after defeating Muhammad Ali in a split decision, in what was considered one of the biggest upsets in boxing history but lost his crown in a rematch seven months later and never again found glory in the ring. Leon Spinks Sr. died at age 67 on February 5,2021. He will be deeply missed here as a one of St. Louis professional boxers.

Leon Calvin Spinks was the father of Leon Spinks III who is also a professional boxer and mentor for youth boxers. He's Known as the 3rd Generation God Golden Child with bright a future and mission to follow the family legacy.

The Boxing Family of Spinks has been around for decades teaching boxing skills and technique since young men, growing up in the rough City of North St. Louis.

Leon Calvin Spinks was the nephew of Michael Spinks an American former professional boxer who competed from 1977 to 1988. He held world championships in two weight classes, including the undisputed light heavyweight title from 1983 to 1985, and the light heavyweight title from 1985 to 1988.

The Spinks family moved into the next generation with the sons of Leon Spinks former heavyweight champion of the world. They are the nephews of former world champion Michael Spinks. Cory. Darrell and Leon Calvin all born in St. Louis.

Cory Spinks is a professional boxer. He is a former IBF Light Middleweight champion, and a former Undisputed Welterweight Champion. Leon Calvin was a top St. Louis amateur and 2-0 as a pro when he was murdered in 1990. Darrell Spinks is a retired pro who passed away November 12,2020.

Darrell Calvin was looking forward to being a coach this year at Leon Calvin Boxing Club by planning new routines and techniques to offer the gym. Darrell Spinks and Leon Calvin Spinks are the reason the legacy must go on for generations to come by inspiriting youth in our community.

Leon Calvin Boxing Gym Mission is to help young African American males end the cycle of gun violence, brutality and cruelty in the street of St. Louis. We are creating a safe zone for parents and children, to come and relax while kids are Training, Homework Assistance, Mentoring and Leadership Skills all in a Positive Atmosphere.

Stress Relief

"Physical activity is a known stress reducer; runners experience the phenomenon of a 'runner's high', and boxing is no different. When working out on the punching bag, your brain increases the production of endorphins, the neurotransmitters that create feel-good thoughts. Punching helps to relieve muscle tension that can collect when you experience stress. As you continue to punch, you will find your focus is improved, increasing your concentration and helping you forget the reasons why you are stressed."

It can help you manage anger and overcome it

"Hitting a punching bag can be a physical and symbolic expression of stress or anger. Physically, hitting a punching bag produces a response in your body that helps to relieve tension. Boxing, especially in a group setting is a safe way to release tension or aggression without hurting yourself, or others, helping you to work through any negative feelings and effectively overcome them."

Teamwork is the collaborative effort of a group to achieve a common goal or to complete a task in the most effective and efficient way. This concept is seen within the greater framework of a team, which is a group of interdependent individuals who work together towards a
