We champion fairness by advocating for those with the least access to the civil justice system.

We envision a just society in which barriers to justice are eliminated.

Who YOUR gift helps:

“Bethany” and her husband “Seth” had been married for 3 years. They were having financial difficulties and were living in a hotel. Bethany noticed that Seth was getting a lot of notifications on his phone and looked at the messages. She discovered that Seth had been having an affair with another woman. Bethany confronted Seth and told him that she was leaving the relationship.

Seth then attacked Bethany, pinning her to the ground. He physically assaulted her, then placed a gun against her head, threatening to shoot her. He kept her at gunpoint for over an hour. Bethany finally found a moment that Seth was distracted and was able to escape the hotel room, run to the front desk and call the police. Bethany then called Legal Aid Works. Our attorney got working on Bethany’s case right away, and we were successful in obtaining a 2-year protection order for Bethany and have started the process of divorce. Bethany can start rebuilding her life. One that is free from abuse and fear. The services that we gave to Bethany were services that she could normally not afford.

Legal Aid works is committed to assisting those in our communities who sorely need legal assistance, but do not have the resources to afford such services.

How LAW champions fairness:

Civil legal aid ensures equal access to justice under the law. It provides access to legal help for people who cannot afford it otherwise, especially when it's necessary to protect their livelihood, their health or their family. The quality of justice should not depend on how much money you have. Civil legal aid provides the fairness and equal access to justice that all Americans deserve. Civil legal aid groups provide legal representation for victims of domestic violence, families dealing with threats or neglect from absentee landlords, as well as children, seniors, and veterans who are denied access to health care or benefits. Ensuring that civil legal aid is adequately funded means that we are not turning our back on the most vulnerable.

Your participation in Give Local Piedmont supports our mission, as we continue to advocate for the American ideal of justice for all.
