Protecting land is more important now than ever.

What do you support when you support a Land Trust?

Conserving land and water

We protect soil and water quality by sustaining forests, woodlands, meadows, wetlands, streams, ponds, and aquifers.  Over 80% of the Bantam and West Bantam Riparian corridor are protected through LLT.

Connecting people to the land

We maintain over 12 miles of publicly accessible hiking trails and provide access to the outdoors and community gathering spaces. We partner with schools, community organizations, and municipalities to support and inspire our citizens to connect with their surroundings.

Enhancing green spaces and developing community gardens

We work to create healthier communities through parks, natural areas, forests, and community gardens.

Preserving farms and supporting rural economies

We collaborate with farm families and their communities to ensure that land is always available for local agriculture and food production.

Sustaining wildlife and biodiversity

We manage strategic preservation properties to allow for wildlife habitat corridors.

Protecting scenic views

We protect gorgeous scenic viewsheds from being lost to development.

Connecting communities to the land, history, and each other

We are part of our community and work to preserve the natural and historic places that are important to our local history.

Mitigating climate change

Maintaining healthy forests is a key strategy for the absorption of atmospheric carbon.

Our small but mighty all-volunteer board currently oversees over 4,000 protected acres in Litchfield, making LLT the 8th largest land trust in the state of Connecticut!  If our work aligns with your values, we hope you will support us in our continuing efforts to conserve and protect land.  Forever.

We acknowledge that we are on the land of Indigenous ancestral tribes. Litchfield is located on the Pootatuck tribal homelands and is situated on the homelands of the Weantinock peoples whose descendants are the modern day Schaghticoke people. A small portion of the Tunxis homelands can also be found in Litchfield. For this land and these peoples, we give thanks.

Who We Are

Established in 1968, Litchfield Land Trust (LLT) has served to conserve more than 3,500 acres of environmentally sensitive land in partnership with landowners in our community. LLT has established and maintains five hiking trails that are open for public recreation and a community garden that is a hub for local gardeners. LLT seeks to preserve environmentally sensitive corridors to provide sustainable habitats for flora and fauna in our region.
