Literacy Volunteers of Greater Waterbury, Inc.

Literacy Volunteers of Greater Waterbury (LVGW) is dedicated to improving lives through literacy by providing educational opportunities for adults, made possible through the support of trained volunteers and strong community partnerships. Our Adult Literacy Program offers FREE English as a Second Language (ESL), Basic Literacy, Workforce Literacy, and U.S. Citizenship preparation to adult learners in our community, both in person and virtually.

The joy of seeing a student gain a level in reading brings us, and our tutors, so much pride. These moments represent hard work, growth, and new opportunities.

We recently asked our students: “What is one thing you can do now that you couldn’t do before working with your LVGW tutor?”

Here’s what they shared:

✨ “Now I can talk more with people, not feel shy.”

✨ “I can understand my job better and follow directions.”

✨ “I can fill out forms by myself.”

✨ “I can speak with my child’s teacher and understand.”

✨ “I can read more words and sentences.”

✨ “I can go to the store and ask questions.”

✨ “I can write small messages and emails.”

✨ “I feel more confident to speak English every day.”

These are more than just skills, they are life-changing outcomes.
