Our mission is to use functional literacy education to empower learners to achieve academic success, develop life skills, and improve work competencies in the Texarkana region.

"Exit at the Applebee's and turn left. If you get to all the car lots, you have gone too far." Can you imagine trying to navigate a new town without being able to read any of the street signs?

Oree had to.

Despite his fear, he drove an hour to follow these directions to the Literacy Council because he'd been trying to learn to read on his own, and it wasn't working. Thanks to generous people like YOU, Oree is getting better and better at reading those signs.

How many in our community are silently using images and landmarks to navigate through life? Missing out on jobs? Cannot help their children with their homework?
