Little Sisters of the Poor

A nonprofit organization

Continuing the work of Saint Jeanne Jugan, our mission is to offer the neediest elderly of every race and religion a home where they will be welcomed as Christ, cared for as family and accompanied with dignity until God calls them to himself.

Over the years, thousands of elderly poor Residents have received loving, quality care in their twilight years at the Little Sisters of the Poor Home. The Sisters first arrived in Pittsburgh in 1872 and their current home was dedicated in 1924. Today, the Little Sisters welcome 48 licensed skilled nursing care Residents and 40 independent living apartments for low-income seniors. The two criteria for admission are age and financial need and Residents of any race or religion are welcome. Daily meals, meaningful activities, and assistance with activities of daily living are continually offered to all Residents. The philosophy of the Little Sisters is to welcome each Resident as family and to provide for their spiritual, social, and physical well-being in a loving, home-like atmosphere. The Little Sisters themselves live at the Home and together with lay staff and volunteers provide 24 -hour care to the elderly living with them.

Testimonials

The following are excerpts from a family satisfaction survey:
"Over the years, our family, including our Aunt has had experience with several nursing homes. None can compare with the special physical, social, emotional and spiritual care that our Aunt receives every day at Little Sisters of the Poor. We are very grateful to all of you."
"I feel like a family member rather than a visitor. The home is very clean, good food, friendly people, safe environment, great activities. Staff are wonderful people to speak with anytime. They are not at the Home for a paycheck. They are truly dedicated people."
