Local Motion Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dance education organization. Founded in 2016, Local Motion Project (LMP) was created to make dance and movement education accessible, empowering, and welcoming for all—regardless of age, ability, or financial circumstance. We intentionally center those historically marginalized in dance spaces, including individuals with disabilities, older adults, neurodivergent individuals, and those facing economic barriers. Guided by our commitment to excellence, innovation, and equity, we combine high artistic standards with inclusive practices and research-informed approaches that nurture creativity and well-being.
We remove barriers through tuition assistance, scholarships, and free or low-cost programs offered in partnership with schools and community organizations across Northern Virginia, engaging thousands each year.
This past year marked significant growth. We expanded culturally responsive and intergenerational offerings, including bhangra and drum circles. We also launched Community Moves!, bringing dancers of all ages together for shared creative experiences, including a large Thriller flash mob at the Old Town Alexandria waterfront that drew hundreds. Additionally, our first adult student performance featured over 50 dancers, reflecting both artistic growth and the creation of a truly inclusive dance home.
The studio program offers modern, ballet, creative movement, and tap. This program celebrates the importance of developing a dancer's creative voice and technical skills side by side.
By giving to Local Motion Project , you are supporting live arts in Alexandria and investing in our community’s next generation of creative thinkers.
