History:
Lowell Observatory was founded in 1894 by Percival Lowell initially to study the planet Mars. Over the years, Lowell has been home to many discoveries, including the first detection of the expanding nature of the universe, the discovery of Pluto, moon mapping for the Apollo program, and the rings of Uranus.
Percival Lowell inspired millions with his public advocacy for astronomy. The tradition of educational outreach continues today.
Education:
Lowell Observatory Camps for Kids (LOCKs) are activity-based programs. Lessons, designed by professional educators, stimulate curiosity in science and wonder for the night sky.

Native American Astronomy Outreach Program partners 4-8th grade teachers from tribal nations schools with Lowell astronomers who provide hands-on science activities and teacher training.
Tours combine Lowell's extensive history of astronomical discovery with cutting-edge technology to engage visitors of all ages in science.
Research:
Astronomers and research fellows pursue a wide range of topics at Lowell. Current programs include the study of exoplanetary systems, massive star evolution, and small, icy bodies in our solar system. They use state-of-the-art telescopes to conduct their research and keep at the forefront of astronomical discovery.
