In partnership with NHGives, our state’s largest day of giving, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate the community, commonality, and generosity of spirit that makes New Hampshire so vibrant!
When some people think of MacDowell, they may picture a cloistered group of artists up on a hill, working in solitude on projects that don’t directly impact the New Hampshire community. But we don’t see it that way.
We believe that supporting artists is essential to a just and thriving society, including here at home. Artists are precisely the ones who help us make sense of the world, who remind us of the discipline of hope, who inspire us to imagine. We need their gifts at times like these.
That’s why we’re committed to sharing the creative energy of MacDowell with our neighbors through free public programming that brings artists into the heart of the community:
MacDowell Downtown our beloved monthly public series, invites everyone to experience live readings, film screenings, artist talks, and performances from current MacDowell Fellows.
MacDowell in the Schools connects students across the Monadnock Region with working artists who share their creative journeys and professional insights.
And don’t miss our biggest community event of the year: Medal Day on June 29! This annual celebration opens our campus grounds to all. With studio visits and forested walks, it is a day of appreciation for the artists who’ve worked here, the arts icons over the decades who have received the Edward MacDowell Medal, and the landscape that we are proud to call home. This year, we’ll honor artist and activist Alfredo Jaar, the 65th recipient of the Edward MacDowell Medal. With startling simplicity, his work reminds us of what it means to be members of a larger society, and what our duties are to one another. We hope that you will come and see his neon installations for yourselves by joining us on Medal Day!
If you believe in the role art plays in shaping strong, thoughtful communities, we invite you to support MacDowell today through NH Gives. Your gift helps us nurture artists and share their work with the people of New Hampshire.
MacDowell’s mission is to nurture the arts by offering creative individuals an inspiring environment in which they can produce enduring works of the imagination. MacDowell provides residencies of up to two months to artists of diverse career levels, cultural backgrounds, and disciplines—including architecture, film, interdisciplinary art, literature, music composition, theatre, and visual art.
MacDowell believes that the current moment requires us to pause and consider what will be possible in the next chapter. After quickly responding to the COVID-19 pandemic to protect the health and safety of our artists and staff, MacDowell's focus is on sustaining our mission and considering how we can adapt and grow as an organization. The current global crisis is illuminating cracks in the art world. MacDowell will use this time to continue to identify and remove barriers that prevent artists from participating in our program. Our fundraising goal is to secure our financial future and expand our financial aid program to provide artists with equal access to our space and resources. Since 1907, MacDowell has been devoted to artists because we believe that they have the power to re-imagine our world through their willingness to try and to fail and to try again—an effort that is at the core of all art practice. When you give to MacDowell, you invest in artists and in their vision of the future.
