Martin Luther King Jr Memorial Planning Committee

A nonprofit organization

(Please watch this two minute video to learn more about our organization and mission.)

In 1973, Alexandria civic leader and activist, Alice P. Morgan initiated the City’s first memorial program in honor of the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The program was endorsed by then Mayor Charles Beatley to be held on King’s birthday.  This was a decade prior to President Ronald Reagan signing the holiday bill into law in 1983 and three decades prior to every state recognizing and celebrating Dr. King’s birthday as a National Holiday in 2000.

52 years later, we are still celebrating Dr. King, sharing his work and his legacy with younger generations, and most importantly, still working toward fulfillment of his dream.

Please support us in ensuring our efforts can continue to further Dr King's vision among a new generation of Alexandrians!

Celebration of the arts is a feature of each year's memorial program.

Speakers share their thoughts on the Legacy of Dr King decades after his time on earth.

The Program gathers together Alexandrians of different generations, different faiths, and different walks of life in a beautiful venue.
