Metairie Humane Shelter is a "no kill" shelter that rescues homeless, abandoned, abused and relinquished dogs in the New Orleans area. Upon their arrival at our shelter each dog is taken to the veterinary clinic for a complete and thorough exam, we have no "house" vet on our staff, they are given vaccinations, tested for heart worms and other intestinal worms, and given a physical exam to find any other medical issues or problems that may be present. Upon completion of the exam any and all medical issues are discussed and, if necessary, treatment is scheduled as well as spaying and neutering appointments made. Personality assessments are made and any and all behavioral problems are dealt with accordingly. We work tirelessly to make sure that each and every dog that crosses our threshold is given a chance to have a great life in a loving home with a family of their own. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we do have the occasional dog that is deemed unadoptable and when that happens they become what we lovingly call our "pensioners." Our pensioners are our family and they will be loved, cared for and cherished until it is time for them to cross the Rainbow Bridge and spend their eternity in our family cemetery on our grounds!!
We do this all with an entirely volunteer staff as we have NO PAID staff, our volunteers do their absolute best to provide our babies with all the care, love and most importantly snuggle time they need until they leave us to start their new chapter in their journey through life!!!
