Metamorphosis Women’s Empowerment Initiative

Started in 2020, the Metamorphosis Women’s Empowerment Initiative (MWEI) is a multi-faceted community-based organization in Monroe County established to serve as a catalyst for positive change, to empower and advance women of all ages, ethnicities, socio-economic groups, and educational backgrounds in all aspects of their lives. MWEI provides a safe space for women to access needed resources and harness the power of their own voices resulting in personal transformation, healthier families and stronger communities with a primary focus on: Food Security, Mental Health, Healthy Lifestyles and Re-entry Services.

In 2024, MWEI served over 860 women and their families across all of its lines of service. Our service area encompasses Northeast Pennsylvania with a focus on Monroe County. Clients range from young adults to seniors with an emphasis on the most vulnerable including low income, chronically ill, housing insecure, veterans, women in recovery, and the formerly incarcerated. Ethnically, 30% are Latinos, 26% Caucasian, 20% African American, 13% are Multi-racial, 3% Asian, and 1% other. Forty percent of clients receive either Medicaid or Medicare. About 30% of the women served live below the poverty line. Another 60% are part of the ALICE population (compared to 43% in Monroe County). Although, the organization serves a diverse population ethnically, educationally and age-wise, the majority of the women share a history of trauma, abuse, violence, discrimination and poverty.
