Music Partners in Healthcare

Music Partners in Healthcare, Inc. (MPIH) (www.mpih.org) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization for the promotion of Certified Music Practitioners (CMPs) in healthcare service in Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties. Incorporated in 2008, MPIH coordinates bedside music programs, community outreach and education, provides opportunities for networking and continuing education for Certified Music Practitioners and provides therapeutic music focused in-service training for medical professionals.

Therapeutic music is live acoustic music, played or sung, and specifically tailored to the patient's immediate need. It is an art based on the science of sound. Therapeutic music, offered by trained, certified practitioners, can ease both mental and physical suffering. Appropriate music can facilitate relaxation, assist stabilization, and help bring familiarity to patients who are confused or anxious. Patients who are actively dying benefit from a specialized style of music which helps them relax and move comfortably through the physical release. Live music, provided by individuals trained for this purpose, can meet the individual, changing needs of a patient.

Throughout the greater Sacramento area, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and hospice organizations are bringing music into their patients and residents, recognizing the importance of treating the "whole" patient: body, mind, and spirit. MPIH ensures that trained practitioners serve at bedside, not only assuring the success of the program, but also meeting legal requirements for patient contact and confidentiality.
