In March 2020, when the world shut down, Desireé LaMarr-Murphy opened up her back yard and set up a "market" to give free food to neighbors in need. "I thought it would last two weeks," she says. Now five years later, Murphy's Giving Market serves over 300 families each week from our location on West Chester Pike in Upper Darby. We provide fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, dairy, grains, canned food, spices, and desserts. In 2024, we had 9,743 visits from 1,326 different households with 4,573 people receiving food. We also distribute clothes, shoes, hygiene products like diapers, condoms, and sanitary pads, and fresh flowers (a favorite). We house a mental health space and the Movement of Immigrant Leaders of Pennsylvania (MILPA). Through our Rap's Athl-EATS program, we provide after-school snacks to student athletes at Penn Wood High School. We offer preventative health clinics, English Language classes, and connections to area resources. We are a multicultural, multiracial, multilingual team of volunteers where anyone facing food insecurity will be greeted as a friend and treated with dignity and respect.
