Muslim Americans for Compassion (MAC) engages the community through interfaith, environmental, and philanthropic outreach initiatives and promotes educational activities and events focused on interfaith dialogue. MAC provides a platform for Muslim Americans and all fellow citizens to engage in such a way that increases mutual understanding and respect through service and compassion for all.
MAC is a grassroots organization that is able to change lives and help families because we are transparent, earnest, and open, with our intentions of finding where we can make a positive difference. Our board is made up of community leaders from the Kentuckiana area, many with backgrounds in health care. Over time, we have built a strong network of volunteers and contributors who come together and make a difference.
Each year on the anniversary of the tragic September 11th terror attacks, MAC works with dozens of volunteers in the Louisville area to deliver box lunches to firefighters, police officers, and other first responders. It is essential to remember the brave men and women who lost their lives during that day, and we take this opportunity to let our own first responders know we appreciate their service and respect the work they do.
In times of crisis, such as the devastating Kentucky tornadoes in 2021 and flooding in 2022, we established fundraisers, collected supplies, and made numerous trips to the affected areas. This outreach made new support possible, and new relationships have grown from our visits to the tornado-stricken Dawson Springs. In the months since we first made contact, MAC has provided cash assistance cards to residents and awarded $5,000 worth of scholarships to 10 Dawson Springs high school students.
MAC partnered with Islamic Relief USA and the Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America (APPNA) to provide Ramadan care packages to Muslim communities throughout Louisville and Bowling Green in 2022. Among those assisted were refugees from war-torn areas in the Middle East. We believe that every human being has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness just as it says in the Declaration of Independence. That begins with food security for oneself and one’s family.
Service in all its forms: that’s what Muslim Americans for Compassion is about. That’s why we have co-hosted the Interfaith Iftar Dinner for 14 years. We believe, no matter a person’s faith, we are all fundamentally connected by the human experience. We welcome people of all religions and backgrounds to come break bread with us each year during the month of Ramadan.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us on this journey! That includes the Muslim, Christian, and Jewish communities of Louisville, non-profits in the city such as Dare to Care and Up for Women and Children, Mayor Craig Greenberg, Jefferson County Public Schools, local businesses that have donated supplies, and countless others. MAC makes a difference because we come together as one.
