The National Black Women’s Justice Institute (NBWJI) is a Black women-led nonprofit organization working to end the criminalization and incarceration of Black women and girls—and ensure that those impacted by the criminal legal system can heal, rebuild their lives, and thrive.
For a decade, NBWJI has led research, advocacy, and capacity-building that elevates the collective wisdom and expertise of Black women and girls in order to dismantle pathways to criminalization and increase opportunities and protections for those who are directly impacted by the juvenile and criminal legal systems. Our community-driven research and initiatives address the most pressing issues facing system-impacted Black women and girls. From police violence against Black girls in schools to ensuring women can access safe housing and jobs when they return home from jail, NBWJI’s work advances systemic change and a vision for justice rooted in healing, not punishment.
Through our work and partnership with directly impacted Black women and girls, we’ve reshaped what justice and healing looks like in classrooms, courtrooms, and communities across the country.
Over the last decade, this is a snapshot of what your support has made possible:
Your gift helps fuel the next decade of research and advocacy to end the criminalization and punishment of Black women and girls.
When you invest in NBWJI, you invest in Black women and girls by supporting critical research and initiatives that advance policies and practices that keep them safe in the community and out of prisons and jails.
With your support, NBWJI can:
• Train educators and create tools and resources that help them foster trauma-informed learning environments that nurture the development and wellbeing of Black girls;
• Provide stipends to system-impacted young people who steer and guide our projects;
• Invest in the leadership of directly impacted Black women advocating for and providing gender-responsive reentry services;
• Educate legal professionals to prevent the criminalization of survivors of gender-based violence and trafficking; and
• Engage in research that identifies effective community-led strategies for preventing intergenerational cycles of incarceration.
Your gift doesn’t just support our work — it fuels a movement. It is an act of resistance, a commitment to healing, and a belief in a future where Black women and girls are safe, valued, and free.
Let’s protect the past, power the present, and build the next 10 years together.
The future is ours.
Our Mission
The National Black Women’s Justice Institute is a Black women-led national nonprofit that leads research, capacity-building, and public education to advance healing-centered policies and practices that dismantle pathways to criminalization and confinement and increase opportunities and safety for Black women and girls who are directly impacted by the criminal and juvenile legal systems.
We do this work to end the harm inflicted upon Black women and girls by these systems and to ensure that every Black woman and girl who is impacted is safe and may heal from their trauma, reconnect with their families and communities, achieve economic prosperity, and have every opportunity to live out their dreams.
We envision a society that respects, values, and uplifts Black women and girls and upholds healing—not punishment—as justice.
We invite you to join us in building a world that honors and values the humanity of Black women and girls. Learn more about our impact by visiting our website.
