Who We Are

The Naugatuck Valley Project (NVP) is a network of 24 faith-based congregations, local labor unions, and housing cooperatives, created in 1983 to respond to the wave of plant closings in the industrial Naugatuck Valley in CT. Our mission is to unite immigrants, the working poor, and allies to identify issues in Valley communities, train leaders to research and develop solutions to their concerns, and then act in accordance with their faith and values to bring positive change to their neighborhoods, city, region, and state.
Currently,
NVP’s Environmental Justice Committee leaders are working to improve health, safety, remediation, and future reuse for 8 contaminated properties in densely populated low-income neighborhoods of color in Waterbury and Naugatuck that are negatively impacting residents’ lives.
NVP’s Hospital Accountability Committee leaders won their campaign to extend state oversight of Prospect Medical’s Waterbury Hospital operations after serious health and safety violations were exposed during the summer of 2019.
NVP’s Domestic Worker Bill of Rights Campaign is working in coalition with several statewide faith organizations to achieve passage of a Domestic Workers Bill of Rights by the Connecticut legislature.
NVP’s Affordable Housing Committee has been conducting one-on-one meetings since January 2020 with the intention of convening a 20 – 25 person regional urban/suburban/rural affordable housing committee this summer as a first step in beginning to address the urgent need for affordable housing in the Naugatuck Valley.
Racial, ethnic, language, and religious freedoms are central values of the NVP organization. When those values are attacked, NVP believes there must be a call to public witness. NVP has organized public gatherings since 2017, bringing hundreds of people together to offer support for Muslims in 2017, the Jewish community in 2018, and the African America community in 2019.
NVP issue campaigns have helped low and moderate-income residents improve their Valley communities and their members’ lives. For 37 years, NVP-trained leaders have led successful issue campaigns, including significant improvements in medical interpretation services at the four Valley hospitals, including a first-ever $4.7 million Medicaid reimbursement for medical interpretation; passage of the Safe Drivers Act, allowing immigrants to qualify for driver’s licenses; and the development of a land trust and cooperative affordable housing community.
