Newtown Square Fire Company

A nonprofit organization

Serving Our Community Since 1916

For more than 100 years, Newtown Square Fire Company has represented the very best of neighbor-to-neighbor service. As one of the oldest continuously operating volunteer fire companies in the region, our history connects early 20th-century township life with today’s modern emergency services — all grounded in a proud tradition of volunteerism and civic duty.

Our story began in 1916, when telephone cables connecting local wire stations were strung along exposed utility poles. The intersection of Routes 3 and 252 was a critical communications hub, vulnerable to fire damage. A group of AT&T employees formed a volunteer fire company to protect this essential infrastructure — and in doing so, created a legacy of service that continues more than a century later.

Today, our company remains volunteer-led, supported by a small professional staff of paid firefighters to ensure faster response times. We proudly serve Newtown and Willistown Townships and provide mutual aid to neighboring communities throughout Delaware and Chester Counties.

Always Ready to Respond

Every day and night, our firefighters and fire police stand ready to respond to building and brush fires, electrical hazards, fire alarms, vehicle accidents requiring victim extrication, downed trees and wires, and life-threatening medical emergencies. We even answer calls for pet rescues — because when our community needs help, no call is too small.

But our role extends beyond emergency response. We are active participants in community life — providing fire prevention education, maintaining a safety presence at local events, celebrating milestones with our neighbors, and bringing holiday cheer through our annual Santa drives.

We don’t just respond to emergencies. We help build a safer, stronger community.

What It Takes to Protect Our Community

Providing professional-level fire and rescue services requires constant investment.

Every emergency vehicle must be maintained and eventually replaced. Rescue apparatus must remain fully equipped and ready. Our fire station requires upkeep, utilities, and mortgage payments. Firefighters need protective apparel and specialized equipment. Paid staff help reduce response times. Ongoing training ensures our team is prepared for the evolving demands of modern emergency response.

Each time a fire truck leaves the station, the cost exceeds $1,000.

Without our dedicated volunteers, the financial burden on local taxpayers would be significantly higher. Their selfless service allows our community to receive exceptional protection at a fraction of the true cost.

Powered by Community Support

Our auxiliary and members dedicate countless hours each year to sustaining the fire company through fundraising efforts. From our annual community fund drive to biannual flea markets and flower sales, from BINGO nights at the firehouse to partnerships with generous local businesses — every effort reflects our shared commitment to this community.

Approximately half of our operating budget is supported through township contributions and public grants we actively pursue. Newtown Township also helps offset the cost of replacing emergency vehicles. Even so, community donations remain essential to maintaining and improving our services.

We exist because our neighbors believe in what we do.
