North Grand Neighborhood Services

A nonprofit organization

North Grand Neighborhood Services (NGNS) began in 2005, a 501c3 non-profit organization to address the 46% abandoned properties in the area around Sts. Teresa and Bridget Parish where he served as pastor. In June, 2005 he bought an abandoned property and with volunteers and donated materials he converted the abandoned property into a two-family townhome. Converting abandoned properties into livable housing became known as the Solomon Project, which is named after King Solomon who "was told to build a house in honor of the Lord." By 2015, NGNS had completed 28 developments and reduced the amount of abandoned properties from 46% to less than 5%.

In 2007, Angel Baked Cookies, a youth employment and enrichment program began following a block unit meeting where more than 13 neighborhood youth attended. When asked, "How can we make this a safer and better community for you?" The youth unanimously responded, "We need jobs." Gary hired three youth who made and baked cookies in the rectory kitchen and gave them away. To date, Angel Baked Cookies has employed more than 70 youth and is currently selling more than 1500 cookies a week while operating out of a commercial grade kitchen built for Angel Baked. The Angels (the official job title for the youth) participate in moments of mindfulness, reflections, and regular workshops in order to enhance both their professional and personal development. To date, 100% of our participating Angels have graduated from high school.
