The Ochiltree General Hospital’s current emergency

department is outdated and undersized. The existing 1,200

square foot emergency room has three treatment rooms and

three bays, with no walls separating each, creating a patient

security concern daily. The footprint of the current facility

does not allow room for equipment, medicine or supply

storage; therefore, staff must go outside the emergency

room to retrieve needed items, resulting in patients being out

of view.

The Emergency Department Addition to Ochiltree General

Hospital proposes a new 7,000 square foot

facility that would allow the treatment of more patients with

the required privacy. The new emergency room would have

nine trauma and exam rooms equipped to hold more than

one critical patient while maintaining privacy for each

patient.

The facility would include: a covered ambulance bay for

patient delivery, secure medication storage area, nurse

station, radiology room and a decontamination area.

Ochiltree General Hospital budget for these improvements is

approximately $5,000,000 of which we are requesting

$3,000,000 in Community Project Funding. This construction

need is directly related to the lack of space. The funding

from this request would provide taxpayers who depend on

this facility for their emergency needs the confidence that

their treatment can be provided in a timely, safe and efficient

manner.

The population served within our hospital district is

approximately 10,000 residents from Ochiltree, Lipscomb,

Hansford, Gray, and Roberts counties in the Texas

Panhandle. We also receive patients from several counties in

the Oklahoma Panhandle and the southern portion of Kansas.

The limitations of the existing emergency room creates a

range of unmet needs that significantly impact the quality

and efficiency of patient care and privacy. Delaying patient

care due to the inadequate number of emergency room beds

limits the response time from door to provider. The Hospital

encounters these challenges regularly, treating over 300

patients per month in the 3-room facility.

An EF-3 tornado hit the town in 2023 and 160 patients were

treated in a five-hour span. The patients that needed

emergent resuscitation measures were negatively affected

due to our limited emergency room space. Patients were

diverted to other areas within the hospital, such as the lobby

for triage and post-anesthesia care unit for urgent patients.

This caused limitations on our physicians and clinical staff

because the patients they were treating were not centrally

located. The direct non-reimbursed expenses absorbed by

the Hospital from this single event exceeded $1,000,000 due

to the inability to properly intake, identify and discharge

patients.

Who We Are

At the Ochiltree General Hospital Foundation, it is our vision to create a comprehensive health care delivery system to not only provide outstanding continuous coverage, but to help boost quality of life and the local economy.

It’s a scary fact, but rural hospitals across the nation are closing their doors at higher rates, leaving residents without a health care option close to home. Not only that, but Texas is facing a critical shortage of physicians just as the state’s population ages and an influx of retirees relocate to the state. Ochiltree General Hospital, however, continues to buck that trend by looking ahead and planning for the future. We are dedicated to providing outstanding ethical and professional service while offering the highest standard in health care. With the modernization and expansion of the surgical suite, ancillary services and rural health clinic, in addition to the arrival of Dr. Blasingame, OGH will continue providing hope and healing at home, helping vitalize Perryton and surrounding communities for decades to come. We hope you’ll consider a gift to the Ochiltree General Hospital Foundation. All Capital Campaign donors who give $1,000 and above will be honored with a Commemorative Block on the Wall of Honor or with a Commemorative Brick on the Walk of Honor.
