Ohio River Trail Council

A nonprofit organization

The Ohio River Trail Council is a volunteer-led multifaceted public benefit corporation composed of a dedicated and visionary leadership whose mission is to bring individuals, businesses, and all levels of government together to honor our past and build a "path" to our future by providing active transportation networks, brownfield remediation, economic development, environmental stewardship, heritage preservation, land conservation, and recreation opportunities.

The ORTC supports the inclusion of our waterways in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System that was created by Congress in 1968 to preserve rivers with outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values in a free-flowing condition for the enjoyment of present and future generations. Water trails are similar to land trails as they provide access to places of interest, communities, and natural places. Water trails are utilized by boaters, kayakers, nature enthusiasts, weekend recreationalists, as well as tourists. Water trails includes small-boat launches, shore access, overnight campsites, boat storage, and interpretive signage highlighting significant historical, geological, and environmental information. The ORTC is sponsoring safe canoe, kayak and rowing access to our local waterways while also providing connections to our history, ecology, geology, heritage and wildlife.
